CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Montgomery County Commissioner Rashidah Leverett has been elected Chair of the Montgomery County Commission for the 2026–2027 term, defeating Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden in an 11–10 vote.
While the county mayor typically serves as chair of the commission, commissioners can choose a different chair by majority vote. Golden will remain Montgomery County Mayor, while Leverett will now preside over the County Commission.
The vote also marks a historic moment for Montgomery County, with Leverett becoming the first African American and second woman to serve as chair of the Montgomery County Commission.
Commissioner Jeremiah Walker was also elected Mayor Pro Tem, giving him a leadership role in assisting with commission proceedings when needed.
The leadership changes follow the August general election, which shifted the makeup of the County Commission and set the stage for Monday night’s closely divided vote.
